Director Statement: In my adaption I set out to honor Mary Shelley’s novel. Some people have used the Frankenstein story to stoke fear of science and technology. But Frankenstein's Creature was not a piece of technology, but rather, a living being; and the work I wrote is about the human need for love and companionship. I came to this first from the music side, having studied music composition. Wanting to take people on emotional journeys, I knew I could do that with the music. But there are also stories I wanted to tell. Music can stir the soul and is a universal language. But when you find the words that join the music as equal partners, and in service to the story, propelling it forward in both plot and emotional arc, nothing is more creatively fulfilling. I just had to learn how to do that - which took me 36 years.

Director Statement: I could hardly believe what I was witnessing. How could such a tragedy be unfolding in the heart of the Amazon? As I traveled upstream along the immense Amazon River in a small boat—its vastness sometimes obscuring the opposite bank in the haze—the landscape seemed to be an untouched paradise, far removed from human interference. Yet beyond this illusion of pristine wilderness, I encountered indigenous communities whose cries for help reverberated with desperation. The world’s attention has long been focused on the deforestation of the Amazon, but the environmental destruction I witnessed goes far beyond the cutting down of trees. The most alarming concern raised by the indigenous people was the unprecedented influx of illegal gold miners. Protected lands, which were supposed to remain untouched, were being devastated on a massive scale. Even more distressing, a medical team’s investigation revealed rampant cases of mercury poisoning among children, a direct consequence of the mining activities.

As a student, this naturally piqued my curiosity about how this could impact us if reverse-ageing treatment was made possible. I’ve also had insightful conversations with friends and family about whether they’d take a second chance at youth, revealing mixed feelings: some felt life should be lived once, while others liked the idea of trying things they never had the chance to. Basically, I simply wanted to explore the concept of reverse-ageing to delve into what happens when we tamper with the natural course of life—how it impacts relationships, identity, culture, and our sense of self-worth.

Writer Statement: FELLOW TRAVELERS began decades ago as a full-length screenplay, my first, inspired by a Nikolai Gogol novella. A psychological horror story, the script came close to being optioned by a big-name producer in Hollywood, but never made it to the screen. I filed it away and moved on. Since then, I have written and produced many films, most of them documentaries. Several years ago, I moved from Madison, Wisconsin to Tel Aviv, and wondered if I might turn that first screenplay of mine into a low-budget feature. It was at heart a road story, an eerie tale about three Bible college students who cross paths with the devil. I tried to rewrite it, setting the piece in the Negev desert instead of the Midwest's corn belt, but I was unsatisfied with the result. Then came the invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists and the Israel-Hamas War that rages on to this day. That provided me with a new angle for my horror film. What I have now is a short work of magical realism that has little connection to my original full-length or Gogol's short story. I wrote it with the October 7, 2023 invasion in mind, but my references to it are so vague that several of my readers outside of Israel did not see the connection. That is as it should be. Avoiding direct references to the real-life horrors that have enveloped my home in the Middle East, I wound up writing a surreal film about death, which is more heartbreaking than scary, and, I believe, universal.

The avatar makes its own decisions, wins the game and thus becomes a virtual human being. Frankie falls in love with her intelligence, warmth and humor, despite the fact that she only exists in a computer game. As one of America's most promising roboticists, Frankie builds the computer creature a body, gives it a name and thus transforms her into a delicate beautiful cyborg, with whom he falls in love. They become a couple and Frankie invites her to the prom. Concerned about the implications of a consciousness transfer to a machine, the CIA launches an investigation into Frankie's work, suspecting a dangerous "HRT - Human-Robot Transfer" event. A somewhat scheming mercenary named Ivan also begins researching consciousness transfer, hoping to exploit Frankie's discovery for profit. The couple wins the title of Prom King and Queen, but being pursued by the CIA and Ivan, they flee the prom and are separated for a few days. After believing they are no longer being followed, they meet on the seashore and leave on a ferry to a world where they can be free, watched from afar by the CIA team leader, who has finally understood that the girl is not a danger to humanity. This modern interpretation of the Prometheus myth blends elements of comedy, romance, and science fiction - highlighting the emotional connections that can form between creator and creation, even in an age of artificial intelligence.
